STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford put up three runs with two outs in the eighth inning to beat UC Davis, 7-6, Tuesday afternoon at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
The Cardinal let the Aggies take a 6-4 lead due to nine walks and three hit batters, but Dominic Jose came up with a clutch two-out, two-RBI double to tie the game and Brant Whiting drove home the eventual game-winner three pitches later.
“We needed that,” said Jose. “Hopefully we can build on that and start winning.”
Jose smacked Aggie’s closer Zach Stone’s first pitch off the top of the wall in left for the biggest hit of his season to date. The junior, who thought the ball was a homer at first, said he, “just wanted to get something up and put a good swing on it.”
Jose finished with three hits, one more than he had all season coming into the day.
Whiting finished the rally by driving in Jose on a 0-2 pitch while pinch hitting. He drove a ground ball through the right side to easily plate a run and give the Cardinal momentum heading into another tough Pac-12 series this weekend at Washington.
Stanford jumped to a 4-1 lead behind its first two-home run game since Feb. 16. Zach Hoffpauir and Alex Blandino each went deep for the third time this season on shots to left field.
Hoffpauir’s homer hit the left field foul pole in the second to give him the outright team lead, before Blandino tied him minutes later in the third. Blandino’s was a no-doubt blast that nearly cleared the trees surrounding the outfield wall.
Danny Diekroeger provided a two-out, two-run single to left center in the second inning.
Six Cardinal pitchers struggled with control, as UC Davis came back with runs in five straight innings from the third through seventh. UC Davis scored its first four runs on one hit and totaled five hits for the game.
Stanford’s 25th straight freshman starter Tyler Thorne was the most effective, going 3.0 innings and allowing one run on no hits. Thorne was removed due to a predetermined pitch limit to allow the bullpen to get work in game action. Stanford needed just four relievers over the past weekend’s three games at Oregon State.
Sam Lindquist (1-0) earned the win by throwing the final 2.1 innings. He allowed only one hit and walked one to shut the door on the Aggies.
The Cardinal attempts to get back to the middle of the Pac-12 during its trip to Seattle, Wash., next weekend. The No. 9 Huskies wait with the conferences’ best record at 10-2.
