Morrissey Takes Three-Setter

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 43 Stanford continued this season’s theme of pulling out tight matches, defeating Cal Poly 4-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

Stanford (10-4, 2-2 Pac-12) rebounded nicely after getting swept on the road last week at No. 2 USC and No. 3 UCLA, representing its only back-to-back losses of the year.

John Morrissey’s 6-7 (7), 6-0, 6-4 victory over Marco Comuzzo at the top spot of the lineup preserved the match despite a late charge from Cal Poly (7-12, 2-1 Big West).

Competing in only its second home match in two weeks, Stanford surrendered only four games combined en route to capturing the doubles point for a 1-0 lead.

Anthony Tsodikov followed with a 6-3, 7-5 win on court five, but Cal Poly countered with its first point thanks to a 6-3, 6-2 victory from Ben Donovan at the No. 2 spot.

Robert Stineman added a 7-5, 6-1 triumph at the No. 6 position to extend Stanford’s lead to 3-1.

However, Cal Poly had already booked the first set in each of the remaining three matches. The Mustangs closed to within 3-2 when Jurgen De Jager pocketed a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (2) victory at the No. 3 spot.

With the final matches already into split sets, Morrissey shook off a first-set tiebreaker loss and rallied to a clinch the match.

Stanford hosts Washington (Friday, April 11 at 1:30 p.m.) and No. 39 Oregon (Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m.) later this week.
