Strong Sailing

Three freshman sailors made their Cardinal debuts as Stanford secured top-10 finishes at the Moody Trophy race at the University of Rhode Island and the Navy Fall Women's Regatta in Annapolis, Md.

At the race for the Moody Trophy, Stanford was led by a strong performance from Axel Sly and Cally Tullo in A-division. The duo sailed to eight top-10 finishes in 10 races en route to fourth place in the top division.

In B-division, freshman Amelia Hardy competed in her first collegiate race with Scott Buckstaff to take 10th place in the division. The pair won the second race of the event and finished second in two other races.

Down in Maryland, the B-division team of Lily Katz and Kennedy Placek paced the Cardinal to seventh place overall with a first-place finish in the division. Katz and Placek won three consecutive races in the middle of the event to assert command in the division.

Sophomore Maeve White teamed up with freshman Julia Lambert, who was making her Stanford debut, in A-division, finishing 16th. Freshman Haley Fox, also making her first collegiate appearance, finished ninth in C-division.

Next weekend, Stanford is set to compete in three events around the country. The Cardinal heads to the Navy Fall Regatta in Annapolis, Md., the Yale Women's Regatta in New Haven, Conn., and the Stoney Burke in San Francisco. Live results will be available via scores.collegesailing.org.

It was a proud weekend for the Stanford sailing program, as head coach John Vandemoer and a large contingent of the current team was on hand to watch the program's first member of the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame, Anika Leerssen '00, celebrate her induction Saturday night. Vandemoer and Leerssen were high school teammates in Rhode Island before Leerssen came to sail for Stanford.
