Home Opener Captured

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford picked up a convincing 179-106 home victory Saturday over Hawaii at the Avery Aquatic Center. The season opener moved the Cardinal to 1-0 on the season in dual meets.

The men’s swimming and diving team will next be in action when it plays host to Cal on Nov. 5. The program will also hold its alumni meet at 5 p.m. (PT) on Oct. 24 in conjunction with Stanford’s Reunion Homecoming.

“We had great swims from each class, and I was especially happy with our freshmen,” said Ted Knapp, Stanford’s Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming. “Our team also received great leadership from our team captains.

David Nolan, Daniel Le, Connor Black and Thomas Stephens led the Cardinal to gold in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:17.52.

Hawaii’s Victor Groicoechea won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:32.83 with Danny Thomson (15:42.18) touching second.

The 200-yard freestyle saw Sean Duggan (1:38.62) finish first ahead of teammates Drew Cosgarea (1:38.74) and Jeff Garnier (1:39.78).

Cosgarea bounced back by going 1:47.87 to win the 200-yard backstroke.

Andrew Liang (48.95) made his collegiate debut memorable with a win in the 100-yard backstroke. Classmate Patrick Conaton (49.71) was next in line.

Christian Brown (55.91) and Daniel Le (55.94) went 1-2 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Gray Umbach (1:47.63) was the first of four Cardinal on top of the standings in the 200-yard butterfly, and Nolan (20.49) pulled off the same trick in the 50-yard freestyle. Stephens (20.82) was second in the 50 free.

Nolan (44.68) added another individual win in the 100-yard freestyle.

Kristian Ipsen (392.78) won the 1-meter diving event by over 70 points and was brilliant off the 3-meter board with 422.63 points.

Le later went 2:04.03 to win the 200-yard breaststroke, over three seconds better than teammate Christian Brown (2:07.84).

The 500-yard freestyle went to Jimmy Yoder (4:31.21).

Liang (47.48) also had the fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly, as did Max Williamson (3:49.07) in the 400-yard individual medley.

Stanford closed the meet with a 1:22.33 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
