CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Stanford men’s rowing kicked off its fall season at the 50th Head of the Charles on Sunday in Cambridge, Mass.
The Cardinal continued its tradition of racing a coxed four at the annual regatta. Entering the race, Stanford was the two-time defending collegiate champion in the race. The Cardinal won it in 2012 and took third last year, coming in first among college crews both years.
Strong headwinds slowed times considerably on Sunday. Stanford sat in seventh place with its time at the Riverside Boat Club mark. The Cardinal four slipped to eighth by the Weld Exhibition and then to ninth at the Cambridge Boat Club.
Ninth is where they would finish as they recorded a time of 16:58.58. Stanford was sixth among collegiate teams in the race. Camp Randall won the race for the second straight year.
It was the third straight year at the Head of the Charles for coxswain Nathalie Weiss and seniors Scott Roycroft and Kaess Smit. It was the first trip with Stanford for sophomore Charlie Walker and freshman Allen Reitz, who made his collegiate debut on Sunday.
Three former Stanford rowers were in the USRowing men’s eight at Head of the Charles. David Banks, assistant coach Jake Cornelius and Austin Hack made up 33 percent of the national team members. The group had recently began training again after taking time off following the World Championships in August. The U.S. boat finished 11th overall with a time of 14:46.39.
Stanford will wrap up its fall competition schedule next weekend at the Head of the American in Gold River, Calif.
