GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Stanford men’s rowing team closed out its fall season in style with three victories at the Head of the American in Gold River, Calif. on Saturday.
“It was a great team day for us,” said head coach Craig Amerkhanian. “We had a lot of guys racing and everyone worked together throughout the day.”
The Cardinal started things off on the right foot with a first place finish in the men’s open 4+ race. Stanford took the top two spots with coxswain Greg Wolk leading a boat with Cam Dupre, Peter Wood, Erik Holmvik and Andrew Terajewicz to victory.
The champion pair was Max Freundlich and Charlie Walker. The duo worked together to post a winning time of 19:20, 24 seconds faster than their teammates who finished second.
Walker, who was coming off his first Head of the Charles at Stanford, also was a member of the varsity eight that came away with a victory. He joined coxswain Ardsley Sanders, Ryan Hails, Allen Reitz, Dupre, Ryan O’Rourke, Landon Alecxih, Will Spencer and Alex Barakat as they won by one second over the other Stanford eight. The two Stanford boats were 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Three of the four singles who competed finished in the top 10 as well and the double with Karl Wessendorf and Matthew Park took fourth.
The regatta concluded the fall racing season for Stanford. The team will do a rowing safari for the second straight year in three weeks as they continue to train for the spring campaign.
