Stanford Brings the Heat

DAVIS, Calif. – Four Cardinal players combined for five goals to lift No. 5 Stanford to a convincing 5-1 victory Sunday at UC Davis.

Playing in 90 degree weather, the Cardinal (12-1, 2-0 NorPac West) came out hot and took control of the game early, scoring four of its five goals in the first half. Stanford held advantages against the Aggies (3-8, 0-2 NorPac West) in shots (22-10) and penalty corners (8-5).

Stanford extended its winning streak to six games and improved to 10-1 against UC Davis dating back to 2009.

Jessica Chisholm (science, technology and society) got the Cardinal on the board early when she converted a penalty corner in the 10th minute. It was Chisholm’s third goal this year. Hannah Thiemann (English) and Kasey Quon (communication) assisted the score.

UC Davis tied the game at 1-1 less than five minutes later when it converted a penalty corner of its own. Augustina Singh scored with assists by Jamie Garcia and Hannah Drawbridge.

Stanford responded quickly, capitalizing on a penalty corner for the second time less than three minutes later to take a 2-1 lead. Maddie Secco (human biology) sent a pass to Kelsey Harbin (human biology), who fired a hard shot to the lower right corner of the goal. It was Harbin’s second goal in the past two games.

Alex McCawley (international relations) put Stanford up 3-1 in the 20th minute with her team-leading ninth goal on the year. Secco picked up her second assist on the day when she sent a cross-arc pass to McCawley, who knocked it into the back of the goal.

McCawley extended Stanford’s lead to 4-1, scoring her second goal on the day just before halftime at 33:59. The score marked her third multi-goal game on the year.

Fran Tew scored the only goal of the second half in the 45th minute when she jumped on a rebound and knocked it into the right corner of the cage.

Stanford remains on the road for its next three games, including a trip to Ann Arbor, Mich., next weekend for games against Northwestern and Michigan.
