Hu For Two

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Freshman Simone Manuel once again led the charge, this time along with classmate Janet Hu, as Stanford won four of five individual events during Day 2 of the Art Adamson Invitational. Manuel, who picked up her second A-cut and school record of the weekend, was joined as a medalist by fellow freshmen Hu - twice - and Heidi Poppe.

After breaking the 200 free school record with a prelim time of 1:43.01, Manuel lowered it to 1:42.03 during the evening session. The mark broke Kate Dwelley’s 1:43.14 record in 2009 by more than one second.

Sophomore Lia Neal was second in the 200 free, part of three 1-2 finishes for the Cardinal. Freshman Heidi Poppe and junior Sarah Haase took the top two in the 100-yard breaststroke and freshmen Janet Hu and Ally Howe were first and second in the 100-yard backstroke. Hu also won the 100-yard butterfly to be the only double-winner of the night.

Hu, a Vienna, Va., native, finished the fifth-best 100 back in Stanford history (52.18) and the No. 7 mark in the 100 fly (52.07).

Poppe was the fifth Cardinal to break 1:00.00 in the 100 breast prelim, before moving to the No. 3 spot on Stanford’s charts in the evening session (59.21). She narrowly missed the A-cut of 59.12.

Stanford also won both relays - the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle - with A-cut times. The medley stopped the clock at 1:35.99 and the free group, consisting of Julia Anderson, Neal, Maddy Schaefer and Manuel, posted a 7:01.22, a time that would have scored in the top five at last year's NCAA meet.

The Cardinal remains behind Texas A&M for the Art Adamson Invitational lead with 733.5 points. A&M is up over 100 points with 836.5.
