Impressive Fall For Fawcett

STANFORD, Calif.- Freshman Tom Fawcett dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Virginia’s Thai-Son Kwiatkowski on Thursday morning in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Fawcett earned a bid to the national tournament after capturing his first career singles title last month at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships, defeating Santa Clara’s Ashot Khacharyan 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Making his home debut and playing in just his second collegiate tournament, Fawcett became Stanford’s first singles champion at the regional event since Ryan Thacher outlasted California’s Ben McLachlan 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 back in 2011 in Seattle.

Thursday’s match represented the final competition of the fall season for Fawcett, who produced an impressive 8-2 overall record to lead the Cardinal.

Stanford returns to action on Jan. 13, hosting UC Davis in its first dual match of the spring season.
