STANFORD, Calif.- No. 30 Stanford breezed past UC Davis 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Taube Family Tennis Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

Stanford (1-0) quickly captured the doubles point for a 1-0 lead thanks to victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. Playing together for the first time since their freshman year, seniors John Morrissey and Robert Stineman set the tone with a 6-1 victory at the top spot of the lineup.

The Cardinal then boasted a singles lineup featuring three freshmen, with each player notching their first career dual win. Tom Fawcett, who finished 8-2 in the fall and claimed the ITA Northwest Regional Championships singles title, cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Alec Adamson at the top spot of the lineup. Fellow rookies David Hsu and David Wilczynski were just as solid, prevailing in three-setters after both lost the first frame.

Nolan Paige provided the clincher with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Jesse Ross on court five. Fellow junior Maciek Romanowicz delivered a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Brett Bacharach at the No. 3 spot.

Paul Goldstein, Stanford’s Taube Family Director of Men’s Tennis, picked up his first career win at the helm. Goldstein enjoyed a stellar collegiate career from 1995-98, leading the Cardinal to a 104-6 overall record while becoming the first player in NCAA history to compete as a starting member of four consecutive national championship teams. An All-American during each of his four years, Goldstein capped his career with a Pac-10 Player of the Year honor in 1998 after winning 33 of his 35 overall matches.

“Today was a good start for our group and we’re pleased to get the win,” said Goldstein. “Win or lose, I want to see these guys continue playing the way they are capable of playing. Giving maximum effort every day. I expect our lineup to evolve over the course of the year. We have 11 guys healthy and 11 guys who are deserving to play. It kills me that I can’t play them all because they deserve it.”

Stanford returns to action this weekend, competing in the Sherwood Cup in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
