RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Playing on the road for the first time this season, the 12th-ranked Stanford men’s volleyball team came-from-behind to win 25-16, 15-25, 28-30, 25-15, 15-11 at Cal Baptist, Friday, at Van Dyne Gym in Riverside, Calif. The Cardinal moves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Lancers drop to 2-3 and 0-2 in the conference.
“We battled tonight,” said head coach John Kosty. “We were right there in it in the third set, and then settled down during the fourth and played sideout volleyball.
“It is a solid win for us. Any time you beat a conference opponent it is big.”
Stanford hit .217 while holding Cal Baptist to a .169 clip, despite being out blocked 15.0 to 13.0. The Cardinal posted a side out rate of 66 percent for the match, but increased that mark to 81, 75 and 83 percent in the sets it won, respectively.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Daniel Tublin led the team with his first double-double of the year, posting 15 kills and 10 digs. Junior middle blocker Conrad Kaminski added 10 kills on a .625 attack percentage to go with four blocks.
“Daniel did a nice job for us tonight despite his hitting percentage being low,” said Kosty. “He was consistent and had a solid performance.”
Junior setter James Shaw directed the offense with 37 assists to go with five kills, five digs and a team-best seven blocks.
“I think one of the keys for us tonight was our right side blocks,” explained Kosty. “James did a great job shutting down their left side.”
Rerdshirt sophomore Gabriel Vega, who made his first career start moving to the outside hitter position, totaled six kills and six digs. He moved back to opposite when true freshman Evan Enriques came off the bench to play outside.
Redshirt freshman Kevin Rakestraw entered the match in the fourth set and made an immediate impact. He finished with three kills on four swings with no errors and five blocks.
“Any time a sub can come in and do their job it is good for us,” added Kosty. “Kevin came in and blocked some balls and really increased our momentum.”
Senior Jonathan Tutttle had a match-high 17 kills for Cal Baptist. Enrique Garcia added 12 kills, while Rocky DeLyon had 10.
Stanford wraps-up its first road trip of the year on Monday, Jan. 19 at eighth-ranked USC. The Cardinal and Trojans square off at 5 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks.
