STANFORD, Calif. - No. 8 Stanford cruised past No. 54 Princeton 6-1 on Thursday afternoon in its season opener at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Cardinal (1-0) claimed a 1-0 lead after winning a hard-fought doubles point. After Stanford gained an edge on court three, the matches at Nos. 1 and 2 were pushed to a tiebreaker. The No. 2 duo of Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay locked up its match first, prevailing 7-6 (5) and clinching the point for Stanford.
Stanford relied on its depth to win of five of the six singles matches, including quick and convincing victories inside the stadium. The sophomore trio of Doyle, Taylor Davidson and Carol Zhao surrendered only five games combined en route to straight-set wins, with Zhao’s 6-1, 6-2 triumph representing the clincher.
Krista Hardebeck and Tsay both contributed singles victories to round out the scoring.
Princeton (0-3), led by third-year head coach and former Cardinal standout Laura Granville, collected its only point when Emily Hahn edged Lindsey Kostas 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (6) on court six.
Stanford is back in action on Friday, Jan. 30, hosting No. 44 Saint Mary’s at 2 p.m.
