CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Stanford dropped a pair of games to Texas A&M and San Diego State Sunday to close tournament play at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Cardinal (9-8) went 1-4 over the weekend against a tough lineup of teams, with four of the five squads entering the weekend either being ranked or receiving votes in one of the two national polls.
Stanford received contributions from a variety of players with 17 making appearances over the weekend and nine registering at least one hit.
Kayla Bonstrom had a big weekend at the plate, batting .533 (8-for-15) with five RBIs, four runs, three walks, two doubles and a home run. She has registered at least one hit in 15-of-17 games this year and is riding a four-game hitting streak.
Tylyn Wells (.333), Leah White (.333) and Jessica Plaza also had nice showings offensively to help the Cardinal bat .269 on the weekend.
Stanford capped the weekend with a 4-0 loss against Texas A&M and an 11-5 defeat against San Diego State.
Stanford opened the day with a tightly contested game against Texas A&M that started as a pitchers duel. Madi Schreyer got the start in the circle and was dominant, striking out four while permitting just one run on three hits and three walks in 4.1 innings.
Schreyer finished the weekend with a 1.00 ERA with 15 strikeouts, allowing just two earned runs on 14 hits and four walks in 14.0 innings.
Haley Snyder and Wells came in as relief for the Cardinal and did well to keep Stanford within striking distance of the Aggies.
Texas A&M broke through in the bottom of the fifth when Cali Lanphear singled through the right side of the infield with the bases loaded to score two runs. The Aggies added two more runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 4-0.
Stanford had its opportunities to get on the scoreboard throughout the game but was unable to find the hit needed. The Cardinal left the bases loaded in both the first and third innings and finished with eight runners left on base.

Stanford took an early lead against San Diego State but was undone by a seven-run rally by the Aztecs in the fourth inning.
Kylie Sorenson got her first start of the season in the circle and was effective early, limiting San Diego State to three runs through the first three innings. She was replaced in the fourth inning but reentered at the position later in the contest to finish the game. She allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks.
The Cardinal jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the third inning beginning with a bases-loaded walk by Cassandra Roulund that brought home a run. Kaitlin Schaberg followed with a three-RBI triple down the left field line to give the Cardinal a comfortable 4-0 lead.
The Aztecs countered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own to cut Stanford’s lead to 4-3.
San Diego State did a majority of its damage in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs to take a commanding 10-4 lead. The Aztecs’ rally was fueled in large part by a grand slam by Jenavee Peres. San Diego State added a run in the bottom of the sixth to provide an extra cushion entering the final frame.
Stanford continued to battle until the final out, pushing across a run in the top of the seventh. However, the rally was too little, too late and the Aztecs secured the outs needed for the win.
Stanford will look to get back on track next weekend at the Long Beach/Cal State Fullerton Louisville Slugger Classic.
