Cardinal Conquers Lindenwood

STANFORD, Calif. – One month ahead of the Collegiate National Championships, the Stanford synchronized swimming team hosted Lindenwood at Avery Aquatic Center over the weekend in the Cardinal’s only home meet of 2015.

“I think we’re seeing improvement, but have quite a bit of work to do,” Stanford head coach Sara Lowe said. “With six freshmen and three upperclassmen in the water that’s to be expected a little bit. We’re really happy with where they are. With a month left to go before our Collegiate National Championship I think we’re right on track if not a little bit ahead. I’m really excited about what we’ll see in a month.”

Competing as a team for the first time this season, the Cardinal had entries in the duet, trio and team swim on Saturday and Sunday. Stanford’s team of Erica Slavin, Clare McGovern, Sandra Ortellado, Isabella Park, Marisa Tashima, Katie Gu, Evelyna Wang and Rina Horii scored 84.600 on the first day of the dual meet and improved to an 85.000 on Sunday.

The group defeated Lindenwood in the team swim on both days, as the Lady Lions posted a 76.700 on Saturday followed by an 81.200 the next morning.

“We received some great feedback on our team routine,” Lowe added. “It was a real crowd-pleaser. The judges seemed to like it and think that it was in a really great spot.”

Park, Tashima and Gu claimed the trio on Saturday with a score of 80.900, just ahead of teammates Slavin, McGovern and Ortellado and their 80.600. The two flipped on Sunday, as the latter came out on top (81.867) followed by the former (81.600).

Park and Tashima scored 79.1667 in the duet on Saturday, ahead of the honorary duet of McGovern and Ortellado (78.867) and the team of Slavin and Gu (77.500). McGovern and Oretellado’s routine was the best on Sunday (82.733), followed by Slavin and Gu, who clocked in with a score of 80.300.

Stanford claimed the first six spots in Friday’s A elements with performances from McGovern (81.0500), Ortellado (80.2867), Slavin (80.1900), Tashima (78.5666), Gu (78.0634) and Park (77.9333).

The Cardinal heads into the final stretch of its season when it travels to Arizona March 6-8 for duals against the Splashcats (March 6) and Synchro Devils (March 7) and Western Regionals in Mesa (March 8).  That will be followed by the U.S. Collegiate Championships in Columbus, Ohio from March 25-28.
