STANFORD, Calif. – Led by first-team selections Nathan Butler and Garrett Schaner, seven Stanford wrestlers were named to the Pac-12 All-Academic teams, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Schaner, a science, technology and society major from Big Rapids, Michigan, is a three-time honoree after earning second-team accolades in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Schaner closed out his Stanford career with a 23-17 record this season, placing third at the Pac-12 Championships and qualifying for his first national tournament.
Butler is being recognized for the first time in his career. The redshirt freshman from Leavenworth, Kansas captured the Pac-12 title at 285 pounds and went 1-2 in the NCAA Tournament. He finishes his rookie season with a 29-9 overall record, tying Zack Giesen (2006-07) and Nick Amuchastegui (2008-09) for the fourth-most wins by a freshman in program history.
Stanford had five student-athletes selected to the second team, led by redshirt sophomores Maxwell Hvolbek and Josh Marchok. Hvolbek, a sociology major from West Hills, California, is a repeat second-team member, while Marchok, who is majoring in science, technology and society, was an honorable mention pick in 2013-14.
Collecting second-team honors for the first time were redshirt sophomore Ryan Davies (computer science), redshirt freshman Connor Schram (undeclared) and redshirt freshman Keaton Subjeck (undeclared).
Stanford’s seven total selections were the most by any team in the conference. CSU Bakersfield totaled six honorees, while Oregon State had five.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be a significant contributor to his team.
