BERKELEY, Calif. -- A day after hitting two three-run home runs, Zach Hoffpauir slammed a two-run shot as part of a 3-for-4 day to lead the Stanford baseball team to a 12-6 win at California’s Evans Diamond Sunday afternoon. The Cardinal clinched the Pac-12 series, 2-1.
Stanford (14-19, 2-10 Pac-12) led from start to finish after scoring a run in the first inning for the third straight game. Two runs in the third, Hoffpauir’s homer in the fifth and six more in the sixth put the game out of reach.
"I think we can get rolling, start winning some series, and maybe do what we did last year," Hoffpauir said.
Hoffpauir’s line-drive blast to left field gave him nine RBI for the series. He also hit a sac fly in the first, singled in the third and doubled in the seventh to finish 6-12 (.500) with three homers and four runs scored in the series.
Starting pitcher Andrew Summerville (3-0) got the Cardinal bats back in the dugout quickly in 6.0 innings on the mound. The lefty allowed just four hits, walked two and struck out four to push his scoreless innings streak to 12 and earn his second win of the week. He stayed in and around the zone, throwing 63 strikes on 96 pitches.
The Cardinal scored all of its sixth-inning runs with two outs. Beau Branton and Jonny Locher had RBI singles as part of the team’s second six-run frame in its last seven innings.
Eight Cardinal players had at least one hit, as Stanford outslugged Cal, 14 hits to 10. Tommy Edman went 3-5 with three runs scored to finish the series 7-13 (.538) with six runs and five RBI.
The Bears scored all of its runs in the eighth, including a grand slam by Brian Celsi to end the shutout bid.
California (22-11, 9-6 Pac-12) used five pitchers with lefty starter Matt Ladrech taking the loss. Ladrech was roughed up for five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings in his second start of the season against Stanford.
Santa Clara hosts Stanford Tuesday in the Cardinal’s next contest. Utah visits Klein Field at Sunken Diamond Friday-Sunday.
