STANFORD, Calif. - John Morrissey has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week for April 6-12, as announced today by the conference office.
It’s the first career honor for Morrissey and second for a Cardinal player this season, as Maciek Romanowicz was recognized from Feb. 16-22.
Morrissey won all three of his singles matches as Stanford (15-4, 6-0 Pac-12) finished 3-0 last week, defeating Fresno State, No. 15 UCLA and No. 5 USC. The senior from Dublin, Ireland, highlighted his week with a dual-clinching match against No. 19 Roberto Quiroz, prevailing 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), 6-3 as Stanford defeated USC 4-3 on Saturday for the first time since 2011, spanning 10 meetings.
Morrissey also notched a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over No. 119 Martin Redlicki of UCLA on Friday to lead Stanford past UCLA 4-3, signaling the first sweep of the SoCal schools since 2009.
Stanford has clinched at least a share of the Pac-12 title, something it last accomplished in 2010. With a victory over California on Saturday (2 p.m. PT), Stanford can claim the conference crown outright for the first time since 2003.
