STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford head coach Jason Borrelli and his staff have signed five promising high school seniors to wrestle for the Cardinal starting this fall. All five will add depth to the Cardinal’s upper weight classes.
Stanford’s incoming class consists of Cole DePasquale (Robinson High School), Austin-Caleb Flores (Clovis North High School), Cody Maly (Columbia Independent School/Choate Rosemary Hall), Trevor Rasmussen (Crook County High School) and David Showunmi (Blair Academy).
Depasquale, a native of Clifton, Virginia, will likely wrestle at 184 pounds for the Cardinal. A two-time Virginia state champion (2014, 2015) he also reached the state finals as a sophomore. He is ranked 20th nationally at 182 pounds by InterMat and was a 2013 Beast of the East (4th) and Ironman (8th) placewinner.
Flores comes to The Farm ranked 13th in the nation at 195 pounds by Flowrestling. A Clovis, California native, he is the younger brother of Ryan Flores who was an NCAA finalist and two-time All-American at heavyweight for American University. The 2015 California state champion at 195 pounds, he is a two-time California state medalist, placing fourth at 170 pounds in 2014. Flores is also a two-time Flonationals All-American (3rd – 2015, 6th – 2014) and a two-time NHSCA Nationals All-American (3rd – 2015, 4th – 2014). Additionally, he was the 2015 Doc Buchanan Champion and placed fifth at Ironman this season.
Maly will join the Cardinal as a 197-pounder in the fall. A Columbia, Missouri native, he graduated from Columbia Independent School in 2014 and enrolled at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut for a postgraduate year. He is a three-time Missouri state qualifier and the 2014 Missouri state champion at 182 pounds.
Rasmussen, out of Prineville, Oregon, is a two-time Oregon state champion at 220 pounds (2014, 2015) and will add depth for the Cardinal at heavyweight. He is a three-time Reno Worlds champion from 2013-15, and a Reno Tournament of Champions finalist (2014). He was also a Reser’s Tournament finalist in 2015 (2nd).
Showunmi, who hails from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, joins current Cardinal wrestlers Evan Silver, Maxwell Hvolbek and Walker Dempsey as Blair Academy products. He comes to Stanford as a 197-pounder, ranked No. 6 nationally by Flowrestling and No. 8 by InterMat (220 pounds). The 2015 National Prep Champion, Showunmi is a two-time National Prep All-American (6th – 2013). He was the 2014 Ironman Champion and a Fargo Junior Freestyle All-American (6th). Furthermore, he is a three-time Ironman placewinner and a three-time Beast of the East placewinner.
Stanford returns four NCAA qualifiers to its roster for 2015-16, including All-American Jim Wilson (165 pounds).
