STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford men’s volleyball regular season is coming to a close as the Cardinal hosts UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, April 18 at 5:30 p.m. It marks the final home match for the five Stanford seniors, who will be recognized with a Senior Night ceremony following the match.
GoStanford.com has been highlighting each senior this week leading up to the match on Saturday. Our final senior is outside hitter Daniel Tublin.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Tublin has already received his undergraduate degree in public policy. He will earn a master’s this June in the same field. A two-time MPSF All-Academic selection, Tublin has seen significant playing time during his career, moving into one the Cardinal’s starting outside hitter roles this season.
GoStanford: Looking back, what are some of your favorite memories with Stanford volleyball?
DT: Beating BYU in the 2012 MPSF semifinals in a crazy fourth set. Beating BYU in the national semifinals last year. Fourth time is a charm. And beating BYU twice at home this year as a clear underdog. They were the first games my grandmother attended since high school. She proved to be a good luck charm. Overall, I will cherish the memories of beating BYU. Also, the foreign tour to Europe was a blast. Hanging with my best friends on vacation and playing volleyball at the same time was amazing.
GoStanford: What do you know now that you wish you knew as a freshman?
DT: On the court, I wish that I knew that I needed to focus on tooling the block (still learning) and hitting away from angle of approach (still learning). But as a senior now, I actually can still learn from my attitude as a freshman. When the season becomes a grind, it's beneficial to reflect on the passion and love for the game that I brought from Pittsburgh.
GoStanford: What do you think you will miss most about this team?
DT: I will miss the locker room. The constant banter, music, and horrible jokes that occurred during my five years cannot be replicated in another place. It's awesome to have a place where we can share the feeling that we all worked really hard together on a common goal.
GoStanford: Off the court, what has been the best thing you have experienced at Stanford?
DT: Spring Quarter.
GoStanford: What has been your favorite class at Stanford and why?
DT: Law 233: Antitrust. I am actually taking it right now and I love it. It's this great combination of the economics and critical thinking that I learned as an undergrad. The class is challenging, but I actually look forward to the work.
GoStanford: What will you miss most about being a college student?
DT: First, the dining hall. I will miss going into Arrillaga and gorging myself. I'm decent at cooking, but I can only make so many different types of dishes. But mostly, I will miss being in close proximity to so many good friends and awesome people.
GoStanford: What are your plans for after graduation?
DT: I am doing a short stint this summer with an economic consulting firm in Berkeley before I take my chances and try to play professional volleyball somewhere in Europe.
