WASHINGTON, D.C. – Stanford junior midfielder Lucy Dikeou was named Thursday as one of 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Award, emblematic of the best player in collegiate lacrosse.
Dikeou was not on the original 50-player watch list, released in February, but the Denver native played her way on. She leads Stanford in points (43), goals (32), shots (65), draw controls (49), caused turnovers (19), free-position goals (9), and game-winning goals (4).
Dikeou has great quickness, speed, and a strong sense of determination and fearlessness. Her all-around play has been vital to Stanford’s 8-0 conference record (12-2 overall) and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season title, the Cardinal’s first since 2011. The Cardinal also is ranked No. 15 in the nation by the IWLCA.
Stanford completes its regular season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. at California. The Cardinal will be the No. 1 seed in the MPSF tournament and advance directly to the semifinals, May 1 at 3 p.m. PT.
This is Dikeou’s first nomination, though she was on the Tewaaraton preseason watch list in 2014. Stanford has had nine players in its history make Tewaaraton watch lists or nomination lists. There are 25 nominees for each the men and the women.
Dikeou is the fourth Stanford player all-time to make it this far in the Tewaaraton process and is the first since Leslie Foard and Lauren Schmidt were nominated in 2011. Goalie Laura Shane was among 18 semifinalists in 2008 and a nominee in 2006.
Five men’s and five women’s finalists will be announced on May 7 and invited to the ceremony. The Tewaaraton Award ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C., on May 28, at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian.
