MIAMI – The Stanford sand volleyball team went 1-2, Friday, in the Doctors Hospital Surf and Turf Invitational held in Lummus Park on South Beach in Miami.
The Cardinal (4-3) opened the day with a sweep over Carson Newman. Stanford’s No. 1 pair of Lauren Birks and Brittany Howard clinched the win with a 21-14, 21-16 decision over Rachel Harper and Jenna Wilson.
Stanford then came up empty against sixth-ranked Florida International, which moved to 15-1 on the season.
In its third match of the day, the Cardinal was edged by Florida Atlantic, 3-2. With the match tied 2-2, the Owls’ Delaney Clesen and Gabrielle Dischler defeated Jordan Burgess and Merete Lutz at the No. 3 spot. Birks and Howard and Stanford’s No. 2 pair, Madi Bugg and Ivana Vanjak, both picked up wins against Florida Atlantic.
Stanford closes out the tournament against Webber International on Saturday, April 4 in Miami, Florida.
