Winter Hits Milestone

SEATTLE – Hanna Winter registered two hits to tie Catalina Morris for fourth all-time in Stanford history but the Cardinal fell to Washington 13-2 in five innings on Friday.

A day after tying for fifth on the all-time list, Winter singled twice to move into the fourth spot with 261 career hits. She has two hits in each of her past three games.

“She’s a phenomenal five-tool player,” said Stanford head coach Rachel Hanson. “She finds ways to get on base and make plays. She’s a very talented individual and players like her don’t come around that often.”

The Cardinal (16-21, 1-7 Pac-12) ran into a Huskies (33-9, 5-5 Pac-12) team that had a prolific day at the plate. Washington scored in three of four innings and capitalized on two multi-run home runs.

“We battled and scrapped,” said Hanson. “I really like that although we went down early the team continued to battle and tried to win every inning.”

Kylie Sorenson and Leah White contributed a hit apiece to accompany Winter’s two singles. Tylyn Wells and Erin Ashby contributed a RBI apiece.

Wells (0-4) got the start in the circle and Sorenson came in as relief. Wells reentered the game later to finish with 2.1 innings pitched, while Sorenson logged 1.2 innings.

Stanford at Washington Highlights

Stanford took an early lead with the first four batters of the game drawing walks to bring in a run. The Cardinal was unable to capitalize on the situation with the next three batters being retired and leaving the bases loaded.

Washington responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning, fueled by a grand slam by Krystal Aubert. Courtney Gano added a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to extend its lead to 8-2.

The Huskies rallied to add five runs in the bottom of the third inning and extend its lead to 13-2. Stanford hit the ball well in the fifth but could not find the hits needed to close the gap.

The Cardinal will look to take the series finale Sunday at 2 p.m. (PT).
