Fighting on Three Fronts

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford sailing team endured another busy weekend of competition in admirable fashion, delivering three strong finishes in as many competitions across the nation.

In nearby San Francisco, the Cardinal played host to 26 teams in the St. Francis Intercollegiate Regatta. Stanford was led by freshmen skippers Elena VandenBerg and Will La Dow with sophomore Scott Buckstaff and freshman Amelia Hardy serving as the crew.

The youthful Cardinal finished third in the 27-team field, anchored by a strong showing from the Cardinal A-boat of VandenBerg and Buckstaff.

Three thousand miles away at the Dellenbaugh Women’s Trophy in Providence, Rhode Island, Stanford entered a field including seven of the top-10 squads in the nation. In a similar format to that of the St. Francis Intercollegiate, Stanford’s A-boat included Lily Katz, Haley Fox, and Sarah Placek, while the B-unit included Julia Lambert, Yuki Yoshiyasu, and the ever-busy Placek.

Each boat ended the weekend with 56 points, giving Stanford a 112 total and eighth-place finish.

Hosted by MIT, the 34th Lynne Marchiando Regatta in Cambridge, Massachusetts, also attracted several top teams. The fifth ranked Cardinal waltzed to a third-place finish in a field which included No. 9 Brown, No. 8 Tufts, No. 2 Boston College, and eventual champion and top-ranked Yale.

Stanford’s skippers included Antoine Screve, Hans Henken and Axel Sly, with a crew of J.P. Cannistraro, Nikki Obel, Daniel Ron, and Cally Tullo. The Cardinal started on the wrong foot Saturday, losing its first two races to Brown and Bowdoin College, respectively.

A massive rally ensued, which saw Stanford win its next seven races and 11 of its last 13 to finish 11-4, good for third place in the 16-team field.

This upcoming weekend, Stanford will play host to the Bryson Women’s Regatta and the Cardinal Gold/Silver Invite in nearby Redwood City, California.
