Fast Times at Payton Jordan

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford's Jessica Tonn ran the fastest 5,000-meter time by a collegian this year among a flurry of Cardinal personal records at the 20th Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on Saturday night.

Tonn, a fifth-year senior and five-time All-America, ran 15:18.85 to break her personal record by 14 seconds and move past three-time NCAA outdoor 5,000-meter champion Lauren Fleshman into No. 2 on Stanford's all-time list. It also placed her No. 7 all-time among American collegians and met the qualifying standard for this summer’s World Championships.

And she placed 13th! Such is the depth in a meet that has developed into possibly the premier distance event in the country, certainly a destination for those seeking fast times, personal records and qualifying marks. How deep? Forty-nine men racing Saturday had run sub-4 miles.

One Cobb Track and Angell Field record was broken – by British hammer thrower Nick Miller (252-6) -- and two meet records: by Boris Berian in the 800 (1:45.30) and Miller.

Two national records fell, both in the women’s 10,000, by Peru's Santa Ines Melchor Huiza (31:56.62) and Colombia's Carolina Tabares Guerrero (32:24.24). Two runners secured spots on Mexico’s 2016 Olympic team by achieving the already-in-place Olympic standards – men’s 5,000 winner Juan Luis Barrios (13:15.71) and women’s 10,000 10th-placer Brenda Eunice Flores Munoz (31:45.16).

But the greatest aspect of the Payton Jordan is volume. Here are some facts about Saturday’s action:

•    Three world-leading marks.
•    Seven U.S.-leading marks.
•    Nine collegiate-leading marks.
•    57 exceeded World Championship standards.

On the year’s world list, the Payton Jordan produced :
•    The top six in the men’s steeplechase and women’s 5,000.
•    17 of top 18 in the men’s 10,000.
•    Nine of the top 12 in the men’s 1,500.

On the year’s U.S. list
  * The top 51 in the women’s 10,000 were run at Stanford, either Saturday or at the Stanford Invitational on April 3.
* The top five in the men’s 5,000.
* 11 of the top 14 in the women’s steeple

Tonn finished 13th in the loaded fast section that was won by Kenya's 2012 Olympic silver medalist Sally Kipyego in 14:57.44.

Another highlight came from Claudia Saunders, who was second in the fast section of the women's 800 in 2:01.79, a personal record by nearly a second and a season best by five. It strengthens her position at No. 3 in school history.
