STANFORD, Calif. – Senior mechanical engineering major Kaess Smit was one of 29 individuals chosen for the U.S. Men’s Under 23 National Team Selection Camp.
The 29 athletes will go to Charlottesville, Va. To try out for the men’s eight and four crews that will compete at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria July 22-26.
Two other Stanford student-athletes, sophomores Ryan Hails and Ryan O’Rourke are among the eight announced to the wait list for the selection camp.
The list of athletes derived from erg scores, coach recommendations, past results with the national teams, training results and technique determined by the team’s coach.
Smit has competed in the U-23 World Championships each of the last two years. He helped push the men’s eight to a bronze medal last summer in Varese, Italy and also claimed bronze in 2013 as part of the men’s coxless four in Linz, Austria.
Following the tryouts the full roster will be announced by July 9.
