Six Earn Conference Honors

STANFORD, Calif. – Six Stanford players earned Pac-12 honors including Kayla Bonstrom who was named to the All-Pac-12 first team, as announced Wednesday by the conference.

Bonstrom paced the Cardinal with a first team All-Pac-12 selection and being named a Pac-12 All-Defensive honorable mention.

Erin Ashby, Kylie Sorenson and Tylyn Wells earned All-Pac-12 honorable mentions. Victoria Molina was named a Pac-12 All-Freshman honorable mention and Jessica Plaza was an honorable mention for the Pac-12 All-Defensive team.

Bonstrom had a tremendous season, finishing in the top-11 in multiple single-season categories in Stanford history including: slugging percentage (1st, .806), batting average (5th, .439), home runs (T-5th, 13), RBI (T-7th, 54), doubles (11th, 16) and fielding percentage (T-2nd, .997). She was solid defensively, committing just one error in 381 chances. It is the third all-conference honor of Bonstrom’s career and second first-team honor.

Ashby claimed the first all-conference honor of her career. She was limited early in the season due to injury but finished the year strong in Pac-12 play. She was third on the team with a .280 batting average and produced the second most RBIs with 37. Ashby was second on the team with a .472 slugging percentage. She spent 36.1 innings in the circle due to injuries to starting pitchers.

Sorenson earned the second all-conference honor in as many years, stepping up as the Cardinal’s main pitcher when starting pitchers were limited by injury. One of Stanford’s best defenders and typically the team’s starting shortstop, Sorenson was called into the circle for 99.0 innings and did well to limit Pac-12 team’s potent offenses. Sorenson contributed offensively as well, driving in 28 RBIs and registering seven doubles, five home runs and 32 runs.

Wells had a terrific season after a strong showing in 2014. She was second on the team with a .318 batting average, generating 50 hits, 37 runs, 16 RBIs, two triples and a .381 on-base percentage. Wells was a regular in left field and also contributed 18.0 innings at pitcher.

Molina provided the most dramatic moment during Stanford’s season, hitting a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in the Cardinal’s final home game of the season to defeat No. 24/23 Arizona State. She provided plenty of power, hitting three home runs on the season.

Plaza registered a perfect fielding percentage for the second season in a row. She is one of two Stanford players all-time to register a perfect fielding percentage.
