Scholar Athlete of the Year

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Senior Naomi Cornman has been named the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year.

“I was a little shocked,” said Cornman. “I remember how proud we all were for Ali Fauci when she got the award last year. I am so thankful for my teammates, coaching staff and Stanford University.”

Cornman is on track to graduate in a few weeks with a degree in international relations and French. She is specializing in French literature and international security and history. She has been accepted into the coterm program at Stanford in the department of communication and will pursue a M.A. in media studies with a focus in virtual reality next year.

She is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic team selection as well as a two-time CRCA Scholar Athlete. She is running research in the Virtual Human Interaction Lab on immaterial presence and has done research with Oculus Rift goggles. She is a peer major advisor for French, has been published in the Peninsula Press and is on the leadership team for the Green Living Council.

On the water, she has been the coxswain of the varsity eight for two years. She is a team leader in 2015. Last year she guided the varsity eight to a Pac-12 title to clinch the first team championship in school history.

With this honor, Stanford has claimed Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year in back-to-back years and for the fourth time in school history. Ali Fauci was the recipient a year ago, joining Marielle Higgins (2012) and Erika Roddy (2011).

Cornman is one of five Stanford student-athletes to earn Scholar Athlete of the Year honors this year. She joins Chasson Randle (men’s basketball), Kaess Smit (men’s rowing), Luke Lefebure (men’s track & field) and Jessica Tonn (women’s track & field).
