STANFORD, Calif. - Five Stanford wreslters were recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association when the organization announced its All-Academic Team, Friday.
Stanford's five selections led the nation. Missouri also placed five on the list. As a team, Stanford tied for seventh overall with Bucknell with a 3.264 GPA. Eastern Michigan topped the list with a 3.382 team GPA, while Harvard (3.372), American (3.358), Gardner-Webb (3.352), Brown (3.328) and Duke (3.302) came in just ahead of the Cardinal.
Representing Stanford were redshirt senior Garrett Schaner (science, technology and society), redshirt sophomore Maxwell Hvolbek (sociology) and redshirt freshmen Nathan Butler (undeclared), Connor Schram (undeclared) and Keaton Subjeck (undeclared). Schaner, Butler and Schram were NCAA qualifiers in 2014-15.
Stanford's five honorees makes up two-thirds of the picks from the Pac-12 Conference. CSU Bakersfield's Ian Nickell and Matthew Williams and Oregon State's Seth Thomas also made the cut.
Awarded annually, the NWCA All-Academic Team contains 118 student-athletes and of those, 28 were All-Americans. Ninety-six wrestlers on the team qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships, which is an increase of 19 wrestlers compared to the 2013-14 team. The team grade-point average was determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. Of the 77 Division I wrestling programs, 56 teams had at least one representative on the All-Academic Team.
