Women Qualify For Finals

NEWPORT, R.I. - Stanford smoothly sailed its way into the final round of the Sperry Women’s Nationals today, finishing third in the west regional semifinal.

After two days of action, in which the 28-team field was split into two semifinals, with nine schools from each half punching their tickets to the finals.

In the A-division, first-choice women's skipper Lily Katz sailed all 14 semifinal races for the Cardinal. For the first eight, freshman Kennedy Placek served as crew for the sophomore Katz, while fellow freshman Grace Lucas sailed the final six.

After four races, the A-unit was limping in eighth place. Over the next 10 races, however, the Cardinal turned in six top-10 finishes including two wins and three second-place finishes. Stanford finished the A-division in third place, just one point behind second-place Boston College and 17 ahead of Old Dominion.

In the B-division, sophomore skipper Maeve White, with freshman crews Grace Lucas and Haley Fox, propelled the Cardinal to an overnight second-place position. Today, freshman skipper Julia Lambert and senior crew Alex Archer took the reigns to see out Stanford’s B-squad.

Lambert and Archer were solid all day, finishing top-four in four of their six races, including a win in the second-to-last race of the day. Cardinal B finished the division in third place.

Stanford finished 14 points behind No. 4 Boston College and No. 1 Yale. The finals will take place tomorrow and Thursday, with live coverage available at collegesailing.com
