Boatload of Awards

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford women’s rowing team will need to load up the trailer with more than boats after all the award announcements that came out on Thursday.

Among the list of awards the Cardinal had three named to the All-Pac-12 team, five to the CRCA All-Region team and eight named CRCA Scholar Athletes.

Starting with the All-Pac-12 team, the three to receive recognition were seniors Alix Chrumka and Naomi Cornman and junior Katie Toothman. It is the first such honor for both seniors, while Toothman was the only repeat selection on this year’s list of honorees.

This is the second straight year that the Cardinal has placed three on the all-conference team and 12th time they have had at least three selections.

Cornman has been the coxswain of the varsity eight all season long and becomes the first Stanford rower to earn both Scholar Athlete of the Year and All-Pac-12 in the same season.

Chrumka made a big jump from the varsity four to the varsity eight this season and has been in the top boat for every race she has competed in.

Toothman recorded the honor for the second straight year and has been a powerful rower for the Cardinal varsity eight in each of the last two seasons.

The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association named two Stanford rowers to the All-Region 5 first team and three to the second team. Toothman claimed a spot on the first team along with junior Ellie Parker. It was the first selection for either rower to the All-Region team.

Parker is a walk-on in the program who has worked her way up the depth chart and into the varsity eight in her third season. She was with the varsity four a year ago.

Named to the second team were Cornman, Chrumka and junior Kay Rusher. It was also the first All-Region selection for each of these three individuals.

Rusher slid up from the 2V8 to the varsity eight this season and has been in the stern four for most of the spring.

The eight scholar athletes are Cornman (international relations and French), senior Nicole Gilmore (biology), junior Emily Grundman (international relations), junior Simone Jacobs (science, technology and society), senior Amanda Lorei (English), sophomore Karen Munyan (undeclared), Parker (mechanical engineering) and junior Hope Sheils (international relations).

To be eligible for the scholar athlete award an individual must have a GPA of 3.5 or better and have completed one full year at their current institution.
