HENLEY, England – A group of 15 women’s rowers from Stanford University landed in London this morning to begin a three-week stay.
“It is going to be a great bonding experience for us,” said junior Simone Jacobs. “We came out of NCAA’s really fired up about what we can accomplish next year. Now we don’t have to wait all summer to feed off that energy. We were able to recover but we are all fired up to compete again.”
The three weeks come as a reward for a great season, a break after final exams and one more chance for the seniors to wear their school colors.
The Cardinal will be competing this Friday through Sunday at the Henley Women’s Regatta. Crews from around the world are represented and over 1,000 athletes are entered into competition. Stanford will be putting forth an eight, quad and pair.
The second week will be time trials for the Henley Royal Regatta. After that is the regatta itself, one of the most infamous regattas in the world.
A few members of the team have been to Henley before, but experiencing it as a team and wearing the Stanford Block S will be a special experience.
“The Royal Henley Regatta has so much tradition and prestige behind it,” said Jacobs. “It is really cool to be involved with just an iconic regatta in rowing.”
