Twenty Named All-Academic

SAN FRANCISCO – Twenty Stanford track and field athletes were named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team, the conference announced Friday, including nine All-Americans.

Three men were first-team selections: Justin Brinkley, Dan Emery, and Luke Lefebure. Also, six men and women were second-team choices and 11 received honorable mention.

Six Cardinal earned first-team All-Americans at last week’s NCAA Outdoor Championships. Of those, four of the five eligible for Pac-12 All-Academic honors received them – Valarie Allman, Sean McGorty, Claudia Saunders, and Jessica Tonn.

Saunders was second in the women’s 800 meters for the second consecutive year, Tonn was third in the women’s 5,000, Allman was fifth in the women’s discus, and McGorty was eighth in the men’s 5,000. McGorty was a second-team Pac-12 All-Academic choice, and Allman, Saunders and Tonn were honorable mention.

Earlier, Tonn and Lefebure were named the sport’s Pac-12 Scholar-Athletes of the Year and were Capital One Track and Field/Cross Country Academic All-District 8 selections.

This is the second consecutive season that Brinkley and Lefebure have been named to the first team.
