STANFORD, Calif. - Past and current Stanford men's golf team members had a big presence last week at the Greenbrier Classic at Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
Former Cardinal greats Tiger Woods and Patrick Rodgers along with current standout Maverick McNealy all made the 36-hole cut. Rodgers, the 2014 national player of the year, was positioned in the top 10 for much of the tournament, but slipped with a 4-over-par 74 on Sunday and tied for 60th with McNealy. The latter, who will begin his junior season this fall, played as an amateur, posting rounds of 67-68-68 before falling back with a 73 in the final round.
Woods, a former NCAA individual champion and 14-time major champion, has struggled much of the year on the PGA Tour, but showed big signs of improvement at Greenbrier. He shot a season-low 66 in the first round, recorded consecutive rounds in the 60s for the first time since the Masters this year, and closed with a 67 to tie for 32nd. It marked his first bogey-free round in his last 56 starts.
Woods, Rodgers and McNealy each won the Haskins Award while at Stanford, given annually to the nation's top collegiate golfer.
