GWANGJU, South Korea -- Stanford graduate Felicia Lee ’14 finished sixth in the 100-meter butterfly on night five of the World University Games at the Nambu University International Aquatics Center. She is the second Cardinal to earn a spot in a final after rising junior Lia Neal and Team USA’s 400-meter freestyle relay squad won gold.
Lee clocked a 58.91 to finish 1.08 seconds behind event winner Ying Lu of China. Italy’s Elena Di Liddo was second (58.29) and Slovakia’s Katarina Listopadova took bronze (58.37).
After a 59.27 in prelims, Lee dropped to 58.93 in the semifinals to earn the sixth qualifying spot. She took another 0.02 off her time in the final the next night.
Previously, Lee advanced to the 50-meter butterfly semifinals, but missed the top-eight finals by three spots.
Pool action continues through July 10 with prelim sessions at 8:30 a.m. locally (7:30 p.m. EDT the previous day), with finals set for 7 p.m. locally (6 a.m. EDT).
In the United States, ESPN3, ESPNU and the Longhorn Network will air coverage from July 3-9. A one-hour swimming and diving recap show will air on ESPNU on July 16.
The World University Games feature 21 different sports and thousands of student-athletes from more than 170 countries. The event was created to celebrate university students and their commitment to education and sport.
