Cardinal Heads East

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 9 Stanford begins a seven-game stretch of road games this week when it heads east to take on No. 1 Connecticut and UMass.

The Cardinal’s first stop is in Storrs, Connecticut, to take on the top-ranked Huskies on Friday at 3 p.m. (PT). The Cardinal played the Huskies twice last season, going 1-1 with both matchups taking place in Storrs.

On Sept. 26, 2014, Stanford beat No. 2 Connecticut 3-1 during the regular season thanks to goals from Alex McCawley, Katie Keyser and Clemence Couteau. The Huskies avenged their loss in the second round of the NCAA Tournament when they defeated Stanford 3-1. Connecticut would go on to win its second consecutive national championship a week later.

Stanford then heads to Amherst, Mass. for a matchup against UMass on Sunday at 9 a.m. The Cardinal’s most recent matchup against UMass came in 2010. First-year head coach Tara Danielson guided Stanford to a 2-1 win against her alma-mater in an NCAA play-in game.

Danielson graduated from UMass in 1994 with a degree in sport management. A four-year letterwinner in field hockey and team captain during her senior year, she helped guide the Minutewomen to a pair of Atlantic 10 championships and four NCAA Tournament berths. In 1992, she led UMass to the national semifinals in the program’s winningest season ever.

The Cardinal made its America East debut this past week against California at the Varsity Turf. Stanford controlled most of the game but was undone by a late equalizer in regulation followed by a goal in overtime.

Maddie Secco leads the Cardinal in goals (5) and points (13), while Lauren Becker leads the team in assists (3). Dulcie Davies is ninth in the nation in goals-against-average (1.22) and fourth in save percentage (.844).

Live statistics will be available online for both games.
