STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford junior goalkeeper Andrew Epstein was named Pac-12 Player of the Week for games from August 31 to September 6 the conference announced Tuesday.
The honor is Epstein’s first, the first of the season for the Cardinal and Stanford’s 22nd all-time player of the week selection.
Stanford tallied three shutout victories in seven days last week, winning at No. 18 Louisville (1-0) on Monday and at home against Northeastern (1-0) on Friday and VCU (2-0) on Sunday. Epstein played all but 4:56 in goal in the three matches and lowered his goals against average to 0.25. Seven of Epstein’s 23 career starts have been solo shutouts and he’s played a hand in three others.
The Cardinal hasn’t conceded a goal in the last 318:12, its longest stretch since 2007 (575:51).
Epstein, an All-Pac-12 second team selection in 2014, led the conference, was 43rd in the nation and finished seventh in Stanford single-season history in goals against average (0.86) a year ago. He was the first Cardinal to lead the Pac-12 in goals against average since 2007 and orchestrated a team defense which led the league in that category for the first time since 2002.
Stanford (3-1-0) moved up to No. 13 in the most recent NSCAA Coaches Poll and hosts San Jose State (1-1-0) at Cagan Stadium on Thursday night at 6 p.m. The Cardinal is 11-1-4 in its last 16 matches on The Farm. Over that time, Stanford has outscored its opponents at home, 28-10, and not allowed more than one goal in any of the 16 contests.
