Strong Field for Home Tourney

STANFORD, Calif. – The annual Stanford Intercollegiate, which showcases many of the best women’s players in the country, will be played Sunday through Tuesday at Stanford Golf Course. This year’s 17-team field includes five programs ranked in the top 10, including No. 1 USC, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Northwestern, No. 6 Arizona and No. 9 Stanford.

Hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Stanford is the defending NCAA champion, beating Baylor last season in the match play finals for the first title in program history.

In last season’s Stanford Intercollegiate, the Cardinal shared the crown with USC, both finishing with 54-hole scores of 15-under-par 837. Bronte Law of UCLA won medalist honors with an 8-under-par total of 205 and is back to defend.

Tee times begin Sunday and Monday at 8:30 a.m. PT and Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. PT off the No. 1 and No. 10 tee. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

The Tournament
• Along with 16 teams from around the nation -- including five top-10 programs -- the Stanford women’s golf team will compete in the Stanford Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course from Oct. 18-20. The Cardinal won the program’s first national title in 2015.

• The tournament is hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice, the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at Stanford’s Hoover Institution.

• The event will span three days and features 54-holes of stroke play. Groups will begin from holes 1 and 10. All players will be re-grouped before each round based on respective scores.

The Field
• The 17-team field includes No. 1 USC, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Northwestern, No. 6 Arizona, No. 9 Stanford, No. 12 UCLA, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 15 Iowa State, No. 21 Washington, No. 22 Vanderbilt, No. 28 Oregon, No. 35 Auburn, No. 43 California, Pepperdine, San Jose State, UC Davis and Washington State.

• This season’s field features defending champion Bronte Law of UCLA and 2012 winner Kyung Kim of USC. Four players are ranked in the top 10 in the country individually, including Karen Chung of USC (2), Jessica Vasilic of Arizona (3), Stephanie Lau of Northwestern (6) and Tiffany Chan of USC (10).

Looking Back on 2014
• Mariah Stackhouse sank a 33-foot birdie putt on the final hole to help host Stanford (282-280-275) earn a share of the team title with two-time defending champion USC (284-279-274). Both finished with 15-under-par totals of 837.

Bronte Law of UCLA earned medalist honors at 8-under (65-71-69, 205).

The Course
• Located in the foothills overlooking Stanford’s campus, the Stanford University Golf Course is consistently rated as one of the finest courses in the world.

• Designed in 1930 by renowned architects William Bell and George Thomas, the par-71, 6,130-yard course is steeped in tradition. Throughout the years, Stanford has hosted many intercollegiate and non-collegiate events, including the Stanford Intercollegiate, Peg Barnard Intercollegiate, Pac-10 Championship, NCAA Regional, NCAA Women’s Championship, USGA Junior Amateur Qualifying, U.S. Open Qualifying and The Gathering at the Farm, a former Senior PGA Tour event.

• Stanford University Golf Course has produced many influential golfers throughout the years. Former Cardinal who went on to play professionally include Melinda Daniels-Price, Allison Finney, Martha Freitag, Kim Hall, Sara Hallock, 1971 NCAA champion Shelley Hamlin, 2003 U.S. Women’s Open champion Hilary Lunke, Stephanie Louden, Mhairi McKay, Joanne Pacillo, Jodi Renner, Sally Watson and LPGA Hall of Famer Mickey Wright, who won 13 major championships, including the 1958, 1959, 1961 and 1964 U.S. Women’s Open.

• Notables on the men’s side are former USGA Presidents Sandy Tatum and Grant Spaeth, and PGA Tour players Tom Watson, Tiger Woods, Notah Begay III and Patrick Rodgers.

Last Time Out
• Stanford finished 10th at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate (Sept. 27-29) shooting 289-287-297 to finish at 9-over-par 873. USC won the team title at 828.

• At the par-72 Watson Course at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Florida, senior All-Americans Lauren Kim and Mariah Stackhouse led Stanford by tying for 19th in the elite 12-team tournament. Both finished at 1-under-par 215, Kim shooting 69-71-75 and Stackhouse 69-72-74.

• Sophomore Shannon Aubert posted Stanford’s best final round with a 72 and tied for 28th at 1-over-par 217.
