STANFORD, Calif. – Down 19-16 in the fourth set, the No. 11 Stanford women's volleyball team out scored fourth-ranked Washington 9-1 to force a decisive fifth set, where the Cardinal came out on top 15-13. Stanford (12-5, 6-3 Pac-12) won its third five-set match of the season, defeating the Huskies (17-2, 7-2 Pac-12) 24-26, 25-19, 16-25, 25-20, 15-13.
Freshman opposite Hayley Hodson led all players with a career-high 25 kills, 11 digs and three aces. She now has seven double-doubles on the season. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Merete Lutz registered 13 kills and a team-best seven blocks.
Senior setter Madi Bugg totaled a season-high 55 assists and recorded a critical kill late in set five. The Apex, North Carolina native now has 4,477 assists, moving her into third place on the Cardinal's career list.
Also breaking into the top-10 in a career statistical category was senior Jordan Burgess, who is now 10th all-time at Stanford with 1,222 digs. The outside hitter finished with 10 kills, eight digs and a block.
Senior Brittany Howard came on late in the match, recording three kills in the final set. Redshirt sophomore Ivana Vanjak hit .750 (6-0-8) and two blocks, while freshman libero Halland McKenna collected a team-best 14 digs.
Washington, which out hit the Cardinal .309 to .242 and led in the block column (15.0 to 10.0), was led by senior Lianna Sybeldon's 19 kills on a .720 attack percentage. The Folsom, California native also recorded a match-high 10 blocks. Sophomore Tia Scambray added 15 kills, while senior libero Cassie Strickland notched 21 digs and seven assists.
The Cardinal closes out the week against Washington State on Friday, Oct. 23. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion.
