STANFORD, Calif. – The seventh-ranked Stanford women’s volleyball team fought off a tough Arizona squad, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 25-14, Friday, at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal moves to 15-5 overall and 9-3 in the Pac-12, while the 19th-ranked Wildcats fall to 14-9 and 4-7 in the conference.

The Cardinal stepped up the defensive intensity to come back from being down 13-9 in the third set to outscore the Wildcats 16-5 down the stretch. Stanford, which has now won 19 straight against the Wildcats, hit .235 as a team, while holding Arizona to a .107 clip. Freshman libero Halland McKenna registered a career high 27 digs as the Cardinal out dug the Wildcats 71 to 64.

Offensively, freshman Hayley Hodson tallied a match-high 15 kills to go with 10 digs and a career-high tying three service aces. She now has eight double-doubles on the season. Senior Brittany Howard added 13 kills on .346 hitting and 11 digs for her fifth double-double, while redshirt sophomore Merete Lutz totaled 12 kills, hitting a team-best .391.

Senior setter Madi Bugg notched her team-leading ninth double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs. She also recorded four blocks, including three solo, and three kills. Senior outside hitter Jordan Burgess finished with seven kills, nine digs and two blocks, while redshirt sophomore Ivana Vanjak had seven kills and three blocks. She also served her first ace of the season, which helped spark the team’s come-from-behind win in the third set.

Arizona was led by junior Kalei Mau’s 13 kills, nine digs and four blocks. Freshman Tyler Spriggs totaled 11 kills for the Wildcats, while junior libero Laura Larson collected a team-high 18 digs.

Stanford’s next four matches are on the road, starting Thursday, Nov. 5 at Oregon. The match is scheduled to be televised on ESPNU at 8 p.m. PT.
