Season Starts Monday

STANFORD, Calif. - The 2015-16 Stanford wrestling season starts Monday, Nov. 2 as the Cardinal travels to Pac-12 foe Cal Poly for an outdoor dual. Wrestling begins at 3 p.m. in the University Union plaza on the Cal Poly campus.

Stanford, which is under the guidance of eighth-year head coach Jason Borrelli, went 11-4 in duals last season, including 4-1 in Pac-12 contests.

Redshirt junior Jim Wilson (165 pounds) is the highest-ranked Stanford wrestler to start the season, coming in at No. 4 in the InterMat rankings. He is a two-time Pac-12 champion and placed eighth at the 2015 NCAA Championships, earning his first All-Ammerica honors.

Also returning for the Cardinal is heavyweight Nathan Butler, who went 29-9 in his rookie campaign and tied for the fourth-most wins by a freshman is program history. Ranked 15th to start the season, he became just the fourth Cardinal freshman to win a conference title and qualified for his first national tournament. During the summer, Butler earned a bronze medal for the United States at the 2015 Freestyle Junior World Championships in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil.

Joining the Cardinal lineup this season is highly-touted freshman Joey McKenna (Towaco, N.J.) at 141 pounds. Ranked 13th nationally, McKenna is a two-time Junior World team member, capturing a silver medal in 2014.

Redshirt sophomore Connor Schram, who was a 2015 NCAA qualifier for the Cardinal, is dropping down to 125 pounds this season. He went 18-5 as a freshman and was the runner-up at the Pac-12 Championships at 133 pounds.

Cal Poly returns eight starters and is led by sophomore Colton Schilling, 21-11 with 12 falls at 141 pounds a year ago, and junior Travis Berridge, 18-15 with three falls at 165 pounds.

After facing the Mustangs, Stanford will head east for a dual at Chattanooga on Saturday, Nov. 7 before wrapping up the opening week at the Hokie Open in Blacksburg, Virginia on Sunday, Nov. 8.
