STANFORD, Calif. – Erica McCall had 19 points and 16 rebounds, Karlie Samuelson added 17, Alanna Smith scored 12 and grabbed nine boards and No. 16 Stanford won a Saturday afternoon exhibition against Academy of Art, 81-48, in Maples Pavilion.
 
The game was the Cardinal's final tune-up before it begins its regular season next Friday night at UC Davis (7:30 p.m.). Stanford's home opener comes a little over a week later against No. 21 George Washington on Saturday, November 21. TURNING POINT » Stanford was down, 14-11, with 5:34 on the clock in the first period before it reeled off a 12-0 run over the next 1:27. Brittany McPhee hit a jumper, was fouled and converted at the line. She followed the 3-point play with a layup on the Cardinal's next possession and Samuelson then scored five straight on a pair of freebies and a triple. Briana Roberson capped the run with two more free throws to give Stanford a nine-point lead (23-14).
 
CLOSING THE HALF » The Cardinal closed the first half on a 17-0 run and then scored the first six coming out of the break to extend its advantage to 57-25 early in the third quarter. McCall scored nine of her game-high 19 points during the stretch while Samuelson added seven. When McCall checked out for the final time four minutes into the third, she had finished with 19 points, 16 rebounds and a pair of blocks in just 17 minutes.
 
SHOOTING » Stanford started the game by hitting 19 of its first 36 shots (52.8 percent), which was capped my McCall's layup early in the third to end the Cardinal's 23-0 run. Stanford finished the game shooting 39.4 percent (28-of-71).
 
FIRST TIME » Karlie Samuelson led Stanford with 26 minutes on the court, but a pair of freshman, Marta Sniezek (23) and Alanna Smith (22) were the only other Cardinal to play more than 20 minutes in a balanced effort. Sniezek started at the point, hit a bucket and had seven rebounds and four assists. Smith put had nine of her 12 points in the second half on 4-of-9 shooting.
 
ON THE BOARDS » Academy of Art has one player taller than 5-foot-11 in senior center Caron Brown, while Stanford's starting front line of Kaylee Johnson and Erica McCall each stand 6-foot-3. The Cardinal had 73 rebounds to ART U's 32, including 29 on the offensive glass. Stanford outscored the Urban Knights in second-chance points, 24-8.
 
SCRIMMAGE » Saturday was Stanford's second warmup prior to the regular season, but the first open to the public. On October 31, the Cardinal beat UTEP in a closed scrimmage, 83-63. McCall and Samuelson led Stanford in scoring against the Miners, each pouring in 19. Alanna Smith went 5-of-7 from the floor and scored 14 while Briana Roberson added 11. Kaylee Johnson and McCall each had eight rebounds and Marta Sniezek led the team with six assists. Stanford shot 44.4 percent from the floor (24-of-54) and went 7-of-18 from deep (38.9 percent).
