EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada – Harrison Williams has one more chance to break the American junior decathlon record and it comes this weekend at the Pan Am Junior Championships.
The track and field meet acts as the championship of the Americas for those 19 and under and Williams will be among the featured performers. In his freshman season, Williams twice broke the Stanford decathlon record, won his second consecutive U.S. junior championship, earned first-team All-America honors, and finished as the Pac-12 runner-up.
The season concludes Saturday when he seeks one honor that barely eluded him at the U.S. Championships – the U.S. junior record. Williams scored 8,001 points (under junior rules), only 17 points from Gunnar Nixon’s 2012 mark. Still, Williams strengthened his hold as the No. 3 performer on the all-time U.S. junior list and moved up from No. 7 to No. 3 on the all-time U.S. performance list.
Williams will be among five Stanford athletes competing in the meet, including incoming Canadian freshman Claire Smith in the women's 3,000. The others are completing their freshman seasons: Canadian Daniel Brady in the men’s 400 hurdles, American Olivia Baker in the women’s 4x400 relay, and American Lena Giger in the women’s hammer throw.
Baker, a second-team outdoor All-America in the 800 for Stanford, was part of the U.S. 4x400 foursome that won the gold medal at the World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon, last year. Williams was sixth in the decathlon at the same meet.
