Stanford Downs SF State

SAN FRANCISCO - The No. 18 Stanford wrestling team downed San Francisco State, 30-11, Sunday, in San Francisco. The Cardinal won eight of the 10 bouts in the dual.

Redshirt senior Michael Sojka got the Cardinal on the board first at SF State. The 197-pounder notched two takedowns, an escape and eight near fall points to record a 14-0 major decision over Calvin Nicholls. Sojka is now 8-5 overall and 1-2 in duals.

Redshirt sophomore Nathan Butler added to the Cardinal's team score with a 9-0 major decision over Sam Alnassiri at heavyweight. Butler scored three takedowns, was awarded two stalling points and racked up 4:44 in riding time. He is now 15-4 on the season, scoring bonus points in 10 matches.

The Gators took an11-8 lead after the Cardinal forfeited at 125 pounds and Fern Giron recorded a 17-0 technical fall in 6:33 over junior Eric Cramer at 133 pounds.

Redshirt junior Peter Russo tied the team score at 11-11 with a 3-2 deciison over Joshua Weinberg at 141 pounds. Tied 2-2 going into the final period, Russo chose to start in the down position. After recording the go-head point with the escape, he held off attempt by Weinberg for the win.

The Cardinal regained the lead as redshirt sophomore Tommy Pawelski posted a 6-4 sudden victory decision over Dylan Furtado at 149 pounds. Tied 2-2 going into the third, Furtado took the lead with an escape to start the period. Pawelski went ahead 4-3 with a takedown, but Furtado evened the score with an escape, forcing the extra time. In overtime, Furtado went in on a shot, but Pawelski defended well and turned it into a takedown for the 6-4 win. 

Redshirt freshman Walker Dempsey made it 17-11 in favor of the Cardinal with a 2-1 decision over Tavis Ino at 157 pounds. Ino led 1-0 heading into the final period, but was called for stalling. Dempsey then tallied the escape for the win, moving him to 2-6 on the year.

Ranked 13th nationally, redshirt junior Jim Wilson added to the Stanford lead with an 18-2 technical fall in 5:29 over Tyson Kuahine at 165 pounds. The Lodi, California native registered four takedowns, eight nearfall points and riding time in the win. He moves to 14-4 on the season and 6-0 in duals.

Senior Dylan Morris made it 25-11 Cardinal with a 6-0 decision over Mike Marshall at 174 pounds. Leading 1-0 in the third, Morris tallied four nearfall points and collected 1:33 of riding time for his 11th win of the season.

Redshirt junior Zach Nevills capped things off for Stanford with a 17-0 technical fall over Gabe Fuentes at 184 pounds. He is now 9-7 on the year and 2-1 in duals.

Up next, Stanford hosts Utah Valley on Friday, Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. and Duke on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. Both duals will be held in Burnham Pavilion and admission in free.
