Lee Lands Curtis Cup Nod

STANFORD, Calif. -- Incoming freshman Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach, California, was picked to the 2016 U.S. Curtis Cup Team this week. The eight-member squad will oppose Great Britain and Ireland, June 10-12 at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Enniskerry, Ireland.

Stanford senior Lauren Kim of Los Altos, California was named first alternate.

The 17-year-old Lee becomes the 23rd participant in the biennial competition with ties to the Stanford women’s golf program, and the fifth since 2000. Senior Mariah Stackhouse played in 2014 and helped lead the Americans to a 13-7 win at St. Louis Country Club in Ladue, Missouri. In 2010, Sally Watson played for Great Britain and Ireland, as the U.S. prevailed 12½ to 7½ at Essex Country Club in Manchester, Massachusetts. In 2000, Hilary Homeyer and Stephanie Keever contributed to a 10-8 American victory at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England.

“It’s a reflection of the quality of student-athlete our program attracts,” said Anne Walker, the Mitch and Margot Director of Women’s Golf. “They are standouts in college and amateur golf, and excel in the classroom.”

In 2014, Lee captured the Rolex Tournament of Champions and the Yani Tseng Invitational. She also advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur, quarterfinals of the U.S. Girls’ Junior, and earned a tie for 69th in the U.S. Women’s Open.

Last year, Lee won a silver medal for the U.S. in the Pan American games, and reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Girls’ Junior.

“Her selection comes as no surprise,” Walker said. “We started recruiting her 3½ years ago. That was the kind of talent she had as a youngster.”
