LONG BEACH, Calif. – After winning the opening set, the sixth-ranked Stanford men’s volleyball team dropped the next three to fall at No. 2 Long Beach State, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23, Friday, at Walter Pyramid.

Stanford, which has won the opening set in all nine matches this season, falls to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Long Beach State moves to 8-2 and 5-2 in the MPSF.

The 49ers hit .287 as a team and posted 13.0 blocks, a big reason why the Cardinal hit a season-low .267. Stanford also struggled with its passing for most of the match, yielding nine service aces to Long Beach State. Josh Tuaniga led the 49ers with four aces.

Gabriel Vega and Madison Hayden paced the Cardinal with 17 kills apiece. It was a season-high in kills for Vega, who hit .419 and added eight digs. Hayden hit .406 and collected nine digs and a solo block. Senior middle blocker Conrad Kaminski finished with six kills and four blocks for the Cardinal.

Senior setter James Shaw posted 41 assists, five kills, four digs and four blocks on the night. Jordan Ewert and Kevin Rakestraw tallied four kills each. Sophomore libero Evan Enriques registered a career-high 18 digs, marking his fourth double-digit dig performance of the season.

TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing led the 49ers with 14 kills apiece. Taylor Gregory added eight kills on .439 hitting and five blocks.

Stanford wraps-up its four-match road swing on Saturday, Feb. 6 at CSUN. First serve between the Cardinal and Matadors is slated for 7 p.m. PT at The Matadome in Northridge, California.
