AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 18 Cardinal suffered another hard-fought match Sunday, falling 4-3 to No. 26 Texas at the Weller Indoor Center. Tom Fawcett and Sameer Kumar both collected wins in singles for the Cardinal to push their winning streaks to seven in dual action.
To open the match, Stanford dropped its second doubles point of the season as Nolan Paige and Maciek Romanowicz fell 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. Yale Goldberg and David Wilczynsky came back to knot it up with a 7-5 win in the No. 3 spot, but Tom Fawcett and Sameer Kumar weren’t able to clinch the point in the No. 2 spot, falling 6-4.
Singles would prove to be a gritfest as Sameer Kumar immediately knotted it 1-1 with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 4 spot. Tom Fawcett gave the Cardinal the lead next as he topped George Goldhoff 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 position. It started to look to favor Stanford as Maciek Romanowicz came in next with a win as he defeated 114th-ranked Michael Riechmann 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot to pull it to 3-1.
The Longhorns battled back though as Harrison Scott notched a win over David Wilczynski in the No. 2 spot. Michael Genender fought in the No. 6 spot, pushing Julian Zlobinsky to a tie break in the first set, but ultimately falling 7-6 (3), 6-1 to make it three all.
The clincher came in the No. 3 position where Nolan Paige came out of the gate strong with a 6-1 win before Adrian Ortiz answered with a 6-0 win in the second set. The third set would end up being a test of strength as it went into the tie break, which Ortiz won 7-6 (6).
The Cardinal will take a brief break from play next week before they set to host California on Feb. 20. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
