STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford junior Valarie Allman was named Women's Field Athlete of the Week by the Pac-12 Conference after her performance Saturday at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento.
The defending Pac-12 champion unleashed a lifetime best in the discus of 190-7 (58.09m) in her outdoor season opener. It was the second-longest throw by a collegian this year and the third-longest by an American. Allman was second to Stephanie Brown Trafton, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, who threw 196-0 (59.75m).
Allman overtook Summer Pierson ‘00 (190-0) for No. 2 on Stanford’s all-time performers’ list and trails only Olympian Carol Cady (207-8, 1983) in school history.
Allman, who was fifth in the NCAA last year, is a product design major and was a USTFCCCA All-Academic team selection last year.
