STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Marcus Allen and sophomore Dorian Pickens were named to the 2016 Pac-12 Conference Men’s Basketball All-Academic teams, Commissioner Larry Scott announced on Thursday.
Pickens, who owns a 3.37 cumulative grade point average, was named to the five-member first team. Allen, who owns a 3.10 cumulative grade point average as a psychology major, was an honorable mention selection.
Stanford has produced 65 all-time All-Academic selections, the most of any conference school since the inception of the award in 1985-86. Washington State ranks second, having totaled 35 honorees.
The honor is the first for both Allen and Pickens.
Allen started 25 of the 28 games he played in this past season, finishing third on the team in scoring among regular starters with an 11.1 points-per-game average. The junior ranked eighth in the Pac-12 in steals (1.4 spg). He scored a season-best 18 points in 24 minutes in his season debut against SMU in November. The guard posted his second career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in 37 minutes in the victory over California in January.
Pickens played in all 30 games, starting 19 contests. He completed the season with the largest increase among returning players in the Pac-12 in points per game (+10.3) from his freshman season (2.0) to his sophomore season (12.3). The guard finished second on the Cardinal roster in three-point field goals with 52. He scored a career-high 25 points in 28 minutes, including 22 in the first half, in the win over USC in February. Pickens posted his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds against No. 7 Villanova in November. He also recorded a career-high six three-pointers (6-of-7 from three-point range) to finish with 24 points against Texas in December.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
