Streak Snapped by SBU

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Multiple goals from Anna Salemo and Maggie Nick weren’t enough to stop the offensive assault by the 14th-ranked Stony Brook Seawolves in a 17-7 loss Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. The loss snaps Stanford's six game win streak.

Right out of the gate, the Seawolves (6-3) pushed a heavy offensive attack at the Cardinal (6-2), scoring the first three goals in just over 10 minutes of action. In the 12th minute of play, Maggie Nick finally broke the shutout for Stanford with her first of two goals on the day with an assist from Elizabeth Cusick. Kelly Myers brought the Cardinal closer in the next minute, putting away a free position shot to make it 3-2.

The Seawolves were not to be sated though, ripping off eight straight goals while outshooting Stanford 18-12. The Cardinal attack was stymied by fantastic play by SBU’s goalie Anna Tesoriero, who had eight saves in the half en route to a career-high 13 on the day. Dillion Schoen and Kelsey Murray also added goals before the half expired with Stony Brook leading 13-4.

The Seawolves came out to score two more to open the half before Anna Salemo added her first of the day and 16th of the season. SBU’s Courtney Murphy continued on her tear, adding her sixth goal of the day bringing her season total to 36. Maggie Nick and Anna Salemo answered after with their second goals of the day, but the effort wasn’t enough as the Seawolves closed out the 17-7 win.

The Cardinal returns home to open conference action this week as it sets to host Denver on Friday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
