SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – No. 43 Stanford notched its second Pac-12 victory Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 61 Utah 4-2. Nolan Paige collected his second consecutive clinching point after a red-hot week.
The Cardinal (9-6, 2-0 Pac-12) captured its third straight doubles point even as the Utes struck first with a win in the No.1 spot. Yale Goldberg and Sameer Kumar answered with a 6-2 win at No. 3 before a gritty match at the No. 2 spot went the way of the Cardinal as Nolan Paige and David Wilczynski battled off Freddie McGeehan and Egbert Weverink 7-6 (7-5) to claim the point.
Tom Fawcett struck first in singles, putting away Matt Cowley in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Trailing 2-0 the Utes got on the scoreboard next as Dan Little dispatched Sameer Kumar 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.
Brandon Sutter put Stanford on the cusp of a win in the No. 6 spot with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Freddie McGeehan.
The Utes fired back once more taking a point in the No. 2 spot before the man of the week, Nolan Paige, clinched again for the Cardinal with a 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 win in the 4 spot over Egbert Weverink.
Stanford continues Pac-12 play on the road this week, traveling to UCLA and USC on Friday and Saturday.
